Cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment with Poland

With Poland's accession to the European Union in 2004, an important prerequisite was created to align the legal bases and their implementation along the Oder-Neisse border and to develop both sides of the Oder region together.
The cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Environment and Consumer Protection of the State of Brandenburg (MLEUV) with its Polish partners, which has been existing for many years, has since then taken on a new dimension. This cooperation must be developed jointly in the interest of sustainable development of the German-Polish interdependent region.
The cooperation between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Poland is based on the Treaty on Good Neighbourhood of 17 June 1991. This cross-border contractual arrangement is supplemented by numerous bilateral cooperation agreements. There is cooperation in various working groups in the fields ofagriculture and the food industry, the environment and consumer protection. The environmental administration of the state of Brandenburg is actively involved in the work of the German-Polish committees under the leadership of the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUV). These include the German-Polish Environmental Council and the Neighbourhood, Border Waters and Oder Protection Commissions (IKSO) with their diverse working groups.
The ministry's ongoing regional cooperation with Poland focuses on the three voivodships near the border:
- Lubusz Land - Lubuskie
- West Pomerania - Zachodniopomorskie
- Greater Poland - Wielkopolskie
Multi-year work programmes establish cooperation with the Polish partner institutions. For several years now, the German-Polish ‘Project Group for International Cooperation in the Agriculture and Food Sector, Environment and Consumer Protection - PIZLEUV’ has been providing coordinating support for cross-border specialist work and various projects.
The PIZLEUV develops action plans in order to organise cooperation in a binding manner and in line with current needs. The regular exchange of expertise, joint workshops and excursions, joint participation in events and work shadowing are the most important elements of these agreements. The partners also work together within the framework of INTERREG A projects.
The Ministry supports project stakeholders in the state of Brandenburg who co-operate with Polish partners. Funding can be applied for.
Together with the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, the Ministry participates in the cooperation activities of the Brandenburg state government.
