Stephan Nickisch was born in Luckau (now in the Dahme-Spreewald district) in 1966.

After attending the polytechnic secondary school in Golßen, he completed an apprenticeship with a high school diploma specializing in cattle production.

From October 1990 to April 1996, after completing his military service, he studied veterinary medicine, initially at the Department of Veterinary Medicine at Humboldt University (HU) in Berlin.

He completed his studies after continuing at the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the Free University of Berlin (FU). After completing his studies, he worked as a researcher at the Institute of Anatomy at the FU, where he earned his doctorate, and then worked in a large animal practice that also treated small animals.

From October 1998 to June 2000, he completed his preparatory service for a career in veterinary medicine in the veterinary administration of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. He then worked as head of the department for animal welfare and veterinary drug monitoring at the Detmold district government. He qualified as a specialist veterinarian for public veterinary medicine.

In 2000, his professional career took him back to Brandenburg to the State Office for Food and Agriculture in Frankfurt (Oder), initially as head of the department for animal disease prevention and control and then, in the same year, as head of the department for animal welfare and veterinary drug monitoring.

From April 2001 to April 2016, Dr. Nickisch worked as an animal welfare officer in the state ministry responsible for veterinary affairs. Since 2016, he has been head of the department for animal disease prevention and control (state veterinarian).

On October 28, 2025, Dr. Nickisch was appointed State Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Environment, and Consumer Protection of the State of Brandenburg by Minister President Dr. Dietmar Woidke.

He is unmarried and has two children.
